Re’eh August 04 2010

At the end of the fourth Aliyah, the Torah warns us, “Do not cook a kid in its mother’s milk.” Rebbi Yishmael points out that this prohibition is mentioned three times in the Torah. He explains that the Torah is giving us three separate laws – we cannot cook the kid in the milk, we cannot the eat the kid after being cooked in the milk, and we cannot derive any benefit from the kid whatsoever. The last prohibition includes that it is forbidden even to sell the meat since the money would be used for our benefit.
