Second Section – the Negative Commandments
82. It is a negative commandment “do not refrain from rescuing your friend from danger”
As it states in Vayikra (Leviticus) 19:16, “do not stand by the blood of your friend.” This means if someone sees his friend drowning in a river or in a different dangerous situation, then if he is able to do so, he is obligated to save his friend. Included in this commandment is the obligation to save one’s friend from losing money. For example, a person knows a thief is planning to attack his friend and the person is able to pacify the thief, he is obligated to do so.
This applies in all places and at all times, for men and for women.
