Negative Commandment #63

Sefer Ha’mitzvos Ha’Katzar (The concise book of mitzvos) By the Chofetz Chaim

This book lists the Torah mitzvos that can be observed today

Second Section – the Negative Commandments

63. It is a negative commandment “do not curse a judge”

As it states in Shemos (Exodus) 22:27, “do not curse judges.” If a person curses a judge with G-d’s name or one of His Attributes he is whipped twice (once for this negative commandment and once for cursing another Jewish person).

Also, this verse is a warning not to curse G-d. If a person curses G-d with an Attribute name, he transgresses this negative commandment. If he curses using G-d’s name, his punishment is stated explicitly in Vayikra (Leviticus) 24:16, “one who curses the name of G-d is to be put to death. The entire community shall stone him.” This is the punishment if a person curses G-d, even if he takes back his words immediately after they are spoken. In our present time since we do not judge capital cases, he is exiled and we are to stay away from him.

This applies in all places and at all times, for men and for women.
