HaMelech

Shacharis on Rosh HaShana begins with the word “HAMELECH” (the King). One time, a holy Sage collapsed when he heard the chazan recite HAMELECH. After davening he explained the reason was because he was thinking of a Gemara found on Gittin 56b. Rabi Yochanan ben Zakkai greeted the Roman, Aspanyainus, as King. Aspanyainus responded “if I am the King, then why did it take you so long to come to me?” The holy Sage said that when he heard the word HAMELECH, he started thinking of this and imagined G-d saying the same statement to him. If G-d is the King, why did it take so long to return to him?
