The passuk in this week’s Parsha says, “All his (Klal Yisroel’s) holy ones are in Your hands.” Chazal understand that this passuk refers to talmidei chachomim and means that Hashem watches over them and protects them. With this principle, talmidei chachomim are not required to pay a tax to provide security for a town because Hashem Himself guards them.
