Dvar Halacha On Parshat Vayishlach November 18 2010

The Gemara in Horayos discusses the issue of gid hanasheh, the sciatic nerve, which is forbidden to eat. The source of the prohibition is in Parshas Vayishlach, when the malach fights with Yaakov Avinu and hits him on the sciatic nerve. The Gemara learns that the issue is only applicable on the right leg, as the Passuk says, “kaf hayerech,” with the letter hey before the word yerech, thigh, which connotes the more important thigh, which is always the right in halachah.
