The Gemara in Bava Metzia discusses the duties of a paid watchman regarding the object that he is guarding. The Gemara brings the passuk in this weeks Parsha which states, “During the night I was consumed by the cold and by day by the heat.” This teaches us that if a person is hired as a watchman he must extend himself to the greatest degree to watch the object he is responsible for – even when freezing in the cold or in the burning in the heat.
