Dvar Halacha On Parshat Behar 05 14 2015-5775

Parshas Behar begins with the mitzvah of Shmitah in which every seven years we must leave the land fallow in Eretz Yisroel. In addition to the land being fallow, all of the crops become ownerless and available to anyone wishing to take them. It is for this reason that during the Shmitah year, a merchant selling lulavim and esrogim cannot directly charge for the esrog, since it is ownerless and one cannot treat it as his own for business purposes.
