Second Section – the Negative Commandments

86. It is a negative commandment “do not eat Nevelah”

As it states in Devarim (Deuteronomy) 14:21, “you shall not eat nevelah.” Nevelah is any domesticated animal, wild animal, or bird that died on its own or was not properly slaughtered. Anyone who eats an olive size amount of this is punished by lashes. If someone eats an olive size amount of flesh from a stillborn kosher animal, he transgresses this commandment of Nevelah. Therefore, it is forbidden to eat the offspring of an animal until the eighth day after its birth, because before that time, we are in doubt if it will be a stillborn. If it is known that the gestation period was completed, then it can be eaten immediately after birth.

This applies in all places and at all times, for men and for women.
