The Shulchan Aruch states when we say the statement in the first paragraph of Shema: “Asher Anochi M’tzavcha haYom (which I command you today),” a person should have in mind that the Torah’s commandments are in his eyes as brand new each day. A person should not think of them as someone who has heard them many times making them no longer precious. The Mishna Brura comments that the Pri Megadim writes this especially applies to a person who reads Shema. A person should not quickly read through Shema out of habit, but should understand what he is saying each time.
