There are 49 spiritual levels of impurity in this world and also 49 spiritual levels of holiness. Before blowing the Shofar on Rosh HaShana, we recite Psalm 47 seven times. In this Psalm, G-d’s name of Elokim appears seven times – therefore, we recite the Name 49 times. By reciting these verses, we try to rise up the 49 levels of holiness before blowing the Shofar.
