Pinchas 5772 – Archers don’t wear goggles

By word of the lottery should their inheritance be divided with regard to whether they are many or few (Bamidbar 26:56)

Rashi teaches us how the lottery of the apportionment of Eretz Yisrael was done. Twelve notes were written and each of the tribes’ names were written on one note. Then, twelve boundaries were written on notes. Each set of notes were mixed together and each tribal leader removed two notes. In one hand was the name of his tribe and in the other was the land apportioned to his tribe. But there was something special that happened. Each lot that was drawn would miraculously speak and say, “I am the lot for such and such boundary for the tribe of such and such.” Each lot would actually speak! This was to teach us that the land was portioned out directly by the word of Hashem.

Today, Eretz Yisrael is not being apportioned out to the tribes, but this Rashi still applies to us. Just like Hashem was directly involved in what the individuals of the tribes would receive and He made sure that it was the best thing for them, Hashem is directly involved in how much money we earn. Hashem makes a perfect calculation to make sure we get the amount of money that is best for us.

A person might feel that they should have more money than they currently have. When asked how much money is enough, John Paul Getty answered, “Just a little more.” This is the way many people feel, but everyone needs to realize that they have the perfect amount of money for what they need to accomplish in their life.

The Chofetz Chaim points out that a carpenter uses a saw, but if the carpenter’s saw is replaced with a diamond cutter’s saw, he will not be able to accomplish his goal. The diamond cutter saw is not made for the work of a carpenter and although the saw might be a good saw, it is useless to a carpenter.

The Olympics start in a few weeks. Imagine if a person brings a bow and arrow to the swimmer’s pool or wears swimming gear to the archery range. Unless the archer is planning on shooting all of the opponents, he will never win the swimming race (and if he shoots them, he probably still won’t win as he will end up in jail very quickly). The swimmer will never win at archery either. Throwing his goggles at the target will not accomplish anything.

Everyone has a specific mission in this world and Hashem provides all of our needs to fulfill this mission. He makes sure that our portion is perfect for what we need to do.

Good Shabbos!
