Second Section – the Negative Commandments
87. It is a negative commandment “do not eat Trefah”
As it states in Shemos (Exodus) 22:30, “You shall not eat flesh found in the field that has been torn.” Trefah that is spoken about in the Torah refers to an animal that was torn by a wild animal of the forest or a bird attacked by another bird, like a falcon or similar, and the animal or bird cannot survive due to the attack. Even if a person properly slaughters the animal or bird before it dies, it is still forbidden as a Trefah, as it is called “De’rusah” (which means clawed). There are seven additional laws that makes an animal a Trefah, which were passed down from Moses which he received on Mount Sinai. These are those laws: a perforated vital organ, an internal organ removed, an animal that fell from a height, missing an internal organ, a severance of the spinal organ, an animal with flesh covering the stomach torn, and an animal with most of its ribs broken. It is forbidden to eat an animal or bird that has a wound and cannot live for twelve months with this wound, no matter if the wound came from an animal, a human, an act of Heaven, or it fell from a roof. Flesh from a live animal is also called Trefah and a person who eats an olive sized amount of it receives lashes according to the Torah law. If an embryo puts its leg out of the womb and then pulls it back in, that leg is forbidden as flesh that has gone outside its area.
This applies in all places and at all times, for men and for women.
