Chaza”l say that one cannot say eulogies, or make a shortcut out of a shul, even if it was destroyed, chas v’shalom. The source is a passuk in Parshas Bechukosai. The passuk says, “I will destroy your Mikdash.” Chaza”l extrapolate from here that even when a place of holiness is destroyed, it is still called a Mikdash and retains its holiness.
