The Midrash in Breishis Rabbah states a halachah that one should knock on a door before entering a house, lest the shock cause a danger to the people already in the house. The source is this week’s Parsha, in which Yaakov Avinu says, “I could have died,” upon seeing Yosef. What Yaakov was saying was that if I hadn’t already heard from your brothers that you were still alive, I would have died from the shock.
