When one has a field and grows produce, the Halacha states that he must take off several gifts and give them to the Kohanim, Levi’im, and poor people. The first type of gift is called ma’aser rishon, which is given to the Leviim. In this week’s Parsha, we find that Yaakov Avinu was the first person who gave maaser. When Yaakov Avinu goes to Charan, he says to Hashem, “All that you give me, I will give you a tenth.”
