Dvar Halacha On Parshat Vayeishev November 22 2010

The Gemara states that one cannot marry an “isha katlanis,” one whose first two husbands died while married to her. Interestingly, there is an argument amongst the poskim if this applies to a yevama also. The Torah Shleima and Chacham Tzvi bring a proof a Midrash in our parsha. Yehuda did not want to give his third son, Sheila, to his daughter-in-law, Tamar, since his first two sons passed away while married to her. The Midrash states that this is the source of the Halacha of a katlanis, and Tamar was a yevama.
