In this week’s Parsha, we learn about the “aish tamid,” the eternal flame. Â This was a mitzvah that there constantly had to be a fire burning on the altar in Yerushalayim. Â In addition, there was a separate prohibition to put it out. Â Our sages comment that this teaches us that we must have a constant fire of desire burning in our souls to connect to Hashem. Â In addition, this mitzvah is the source of what we call the “ner tamid” that we keep lit near the Aron Kodesh in our shuls.
