The Passuk tells us that the Mitzrim embittered our lives, “V’ymar’ru es chayeihem.” The word for embittered, “V’ymar’ru,” has the same root as maror, bitter herbs. Chaza”l tells us that this is the reason that we eat bitter herbs on Pesach, to remember the bitterness of the slavery in Miztrayim. The Mishna tells us even further that if one fails to mention this explanation for the maror during the Seder, he has not fulfilled his obligation.
