We find in Parshas Nitzavim the famous passuk, “Lo bashamoyim he,” meaning that the Torah is not in the heavens. Although seemingly figurative, this passuk has halachik ramifications. Even if a Navi was to come and tell us that the pshat of the Chachomim in a certain Halacha was incorrect it would be irrelevant once the Sanhedrin gave their decision. The reason behind this is that the Torah is in the possession of humans and no longer dependent on the decisions of the Heavens.
