The passuk in this week’s Parsha states, “In order that you and your descendants will live.” Rebbe Akiva learns from here that one is required to teach his son to swim, which is an important life saving skill.
Included in this mitzvah are all the various skills one must need in order to survive the various tragedies that may befall a person.
