A proper tefilah is impossible without a minyan. Although the main source that a minyan is ten men is from the meraglim, the spies, this week’s parsha is brought down as a source according to the Yerushalmi. When going down to Mitzrayim, the passuk refers to the 10 sons of Yaakov that when down “bsoch,” “in the midst of the others who came.” The passuk referring to a minyan also uses the word “bsoch,” which gives cause to learn the explanation of one passuk to the other. Just as the amount of sons was ten, so too the amount people needed for a minyan is ten.
