There is a principle in Halacha called, “taam k’ikar,” meaning, “The taste is like the food itself.” This is the source that one must kasher utensils that absorbed the taste of non-kosher foods. We learn this Halacha from this week’s Parsha. After the war that Klal Yisroel had with Midian, Hashem commanded us that, “All of the utensils that were used with fire must be passed through fire.” The intention of this was to purge Midian’s utensils from the non-kosher taste that they absorbed.
