In the week’s Parsha we learn about the stringent halacha of not breaking our vows from the passuk, “lo yachel devaro,” do not make his word mundane. The Gemara in Nedarim adds that from the same passuk we learn that if a particular community has the custom not to do a particular action, and an individual who comes from a different community does not have that custom, nonetheless he should be strict in the place he is in now. The reason is that be flaunting one’s leniency, he is treating the “word” of this place as “mundane.”
