In the parsha regarding learning lost objects, the Torah tells us “[the lost object] will be with you until your brother searches it out.” The Gemara in Bava Metzia comments that this passuk seems to be extra, being that it is obvious that one cannot give it to the person who lost it until he know who it belongs to. The Gemara concludes that this pasuk teaches us that we must be very careful to ensure that the person who claims to object is actually telling the truth about his ownership.
