The Tosefta in Bava Metzia teaches us that it is not only a lack derech eretz and a violation of the mitzvah of “love your neighbor as yourself,” but actually a specific prohibition in the Torah to say something that is offensive or hurts the feelings of another person. The passuk says, “A man must not aggrieve his fellow.” Chaza”l explain that this is a prohibition from “onaas d’vorim,” offensive words.
