The Great Sanhedrin throughout the ages was comprised of 71 people who would decide on the most important issues facing Klal Yisroel. The source of this number is in this week’s Parsha in which Hashem commands Moshe to gather 70 people to help him judge the nation. Including Moshe Rabbeinu, the number reaches 71.
