The Midrash Lekach Tov explains that the various food items that the “asafsuf (complainers)” claimed they missed in the desert were the only foods that the man did not taste like. The Midrash explains the reason for this was that these foods cause one to forget their Torah learning. It seems, however, that these particular foods, i.e. squash, watermelons, onions and garlic, are not mentioned in the Gemara or in Halachah as causing one to forget Torah, and the common custom is to eat them. Therefore, one should as their Rov as to the proper application of this Midrash
