Mitzvah #20
Sefer Ha’mitzvos Ha’Katzar (the concise book of mitzvos)
By the Chofetz Chaim
This book lists the Torah mitzvos that can be observed today
First Section – the Positive Commandments
20. It is a positive commandment to rest on Shabbos from doing work
As it says in Shemos (Exodus) 23:12, “And on the seventh day you shall rest.” We are also commanded and warned to let our animals rest on Shabbos. It is forbidden, according to the law from the Soferim (Sages), to ask a non-Jew to do work for us. This is called Shvus (see the negative commandments #6).
This commandment is required in all places and at all times for men and for women.
