One of the 39 melochas on Shabbos is “Boneh” or “building”. As an introduction to the melocha it is important know that not all objects are equal. Something that is connected to the ground will more often transgress the prohibition than by a utensil. For example, to plug up a hole on the wall of a house is Boneh, while plugging a hole on a chair is not. In order to transgress by a utensil, one must connect two parts together in such a way that they are strongly attached.
There are instances when although Boneh has not been transgressed, its sister melocha, Makeh B’patish, has. The difference being that taking apart something that was originally Boneh to is prohibited because of Soser- destroying, while by Makeh B’patish there is no such prohibition.
There are also differences regarding the permanence of the job done. Sometimes a temporary job is forbidden while other time not.
