Vayikra 5774 – With All Your Soul

When a soul brings a meal offering to Hashem (Vayikra 2:1)

Rashi points out that this verse uses the word “nefesh” which means soul, but when it mentions the others who bring voluntary offerings, it does not use this word. The reason it is used here is because the meal offering is normally brought by a poor person and when he brings the meal offering, it is like he has brought his soul. This is because this is not easy for him – the poor person really needs to give everything he has to be able to give the meal offering.

Why did the Jews complain about the mon (manna) that fell when they were in the desert? It is because they did not need to do any work to get it. It just arrived there. They complained that they remembered having fish in Egypt. The fish was free, but at least they needed to catch it. They needed to do something.

The greatest feeling for a person is when they need to work and give it his all to accomplish something.
