Rosh HaShana 5770 – Every Breath You Take

During the 10 days of Repentance from Rosh HaShana until Yom Kippur, one of the main areas a person needs to focus on is Yiras Hashem, which is commonly translated as fear of G-d. Although fear of G-d is one aspect of Yiras Hashem, Yiras Hashem actually is more than just that. Ever visit a place where you were speechless? Ever go to the mountains and be surrounded by the most beautiful landscape? The reason is because you are in awe. This is what Yiras Hashem really means. It does not only mean to fear G-d, but it means to be in awe of Him and all He does. Let me share a thought that will hopefully bring all of us to a greater Awe of G-d.

G-d knows every little thing you do. He sees every action you perform. Not only that, but he also knows every single thought you have. He controls every heartbeat you have and every breath you take. Basically, ‘every breath you take, every move you make, every bond you break, every step you take, He is watching you.’ He knows everything about you.

But that is not all. There are over Six Billion people in the world. And G-d knows every little detail about each of them at the same time as He watches you. G-d knows what is going on in the thoughts of all of the Billions of people in world without any computers nor video monitors nor any other devices.

If this does not make you feel in awe of G-d yet, there is still more. There are over 1.5 million species of animals on the earth. Remember, this is only species and each species has many members – for example, the number of chickens in the world is somewhere between 24 and 40 billion. And G-d knows every little thing each of these animals is doing. He is in charge of every movement each of them make and ensures that each of them survive every moment they are supposed to be alive.

All of these numbers are beyond human comprehension, but there is still more. G-d watches over all of the plants also. He makes sure that every blade of grass grows, even if it is the smallest fraction. He is also in charge of every drop of rain that falls. He is in control of every piece of dust. Every microscopic organism that exists is under G-d’s domain. Every grain of sand is accounted for. The list can go on and on and on forever. And this is only on planet earth! G-d is truly Awe-some!

Please do not just read this without thinking about it. If you spend some time contemplating the amazing things G-d does every second, you will be in such Awe of Him that your Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur prayers will be much different. You will be able to improve your Yiras Hashem that is so important during this time of year.
