The Halacha states that we have to make a Shehechiyanu bracha every Yom Tov, thanking Hashem for granting us such a holy day. This usually applies even on the second day of Yom Tov. However, on Rosh Hashana there is an opinion that the entire 48 hour period is one long day and the shehchiyanu made on the first night counts for the whole Yom Tov. In order to fulfill this opinion also, we buy a special fruit or wear new clothing in order to make the bracha on them and have in mind that it should count for the Yom Tov also.
